What is a UPF?
UPF stands for Ultra Processed Food. This refers to foods that have been industrially processed and contain ingredients that you typically wouldn't find in your own kitchen, such as emulsifiers and preservatives. Some examples are crisps, processed meats, fizzy pop and ready meals. These foods are manufactured to be easy to eat and hyperpalatable. The term Ultra Processed Food was coined by Brazilian researchers in 2009.

Why is that bad?
UPFs often contain high levels of fat, salt and sugar. They are linked to negative health outcomes, including cancer and cardiovascular disease. UPFs are also often eaten in place of more nutritious foods.

What can we do about it?
What am I doing- try to eliminate the UPFs in my diet and focus more on whole foods and minimally processed food.

How can I learn more?
I would highly recommend the book Ultra Processed People by Chris van Tulleken, and a documentary by him called Irresistable, which is available on BBC iplayer. Lots of information is also available online.
